Teen Patti - Music Review:
There is Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley, R. Madhavan, Neha Dhupia, international model Saira Mohan and host of newcomers who will feature in the upcoming Teen Patti. Directed by Leena Yadav, no points for guessing that Teen Patti is all about gambling and a bunch of greedy folks who are out to win big. So what on earth could the album of such a film entail? Amidst this deck of songs, will we find an Ace winner of will this album crash like a pack of cards? Either way, Yadav has taken on Salim and Sulaiman Merchant to take on the task of this dually making this album Indian and international. And of course, they do manage to deliver. The problem with Teen Patti is that it is far too international in his taste which may actually repel Desi audiences away from this album.
It begins with Life is a Game. Smartly, the composers have come up with a Hindi and English version sung by Anushka Manchanda and Sonia Saigal respectively. The English version has dialogues by Amitabh Bachchn loitering around in the background. Between the two, the Hindi version works much better as Anushka makes the song sound cool and stylish.
Another English number is next in line with song number two. Joe Alvares croons to Summertime. In one word this song is plain average; the joker in the pack of cards if anything.
Neeyat is perhaps one the most seductive songs to come out of Bollywood this year. And if you’ve seen the manner in which the song has been picturized, you’ll realize justice has been done. Remember how we were talking about looking for an Ace card in this album, Neeyat is that very card. Sunidhi Chauhan is literally at her alluring self. You can’t help but be in awe of her singing skills. The remixed version is has Bachchan again reciting lines from the film with a slight rap theme loitering in the back.
There has to be a song which talks about dealing cards and thus, Teen Patti Ka Gulam appears in the soundtrack. And although it holds an upbeat trance-like beat, it still doesn’t manage to create any hoopla. In fact the remixed version is a better option.
Lastly, there is Intezar Mein Chupa Kahin. This one, sung by Naresh Kamat, manages to start of slow and pick up like a rock song. Over time during the course of the song, it picks up in style and pace. An interesting song.
Salim and Sulaiman have tried and for that they deserve an A. However, it doesn’t work as well as it could have. This is mostly one for a niche selected crowd.
